Comedians of the Free World
Senators McCain and Obama attended and spoke at the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner, a fundraiser for the eponymous charitable foundation, which was founded by then-Cardinal Spellman of New York, and which benefits charities such as Good Counsel Homes, Sisters of Life, Pregnancy Care Center of New Rochelle, NY, Cabrini Center for Nursing and Rehab, Calvary Hospital Hospice, and other worthy pro-life causes.
This year, the dinner addreses were a mutual roast, and you can watch the addresses below. My big gripe is that during McCain’s address, the camera was focused mostly on Obama; the reverse was not true. Even when it’s McCain speaking, even when it’s FOX, it’s always about the big O. Sheesh.
McCain is very funny. Betcha didn’t think he could be, but the roast format really suits him. He didn’t try to get overly involved in the jokes — used a very deadpan delivery, which I found very effective. It’s clear he doesn’t take himself nearly as seriously as some other people, which I think is a good thing.
As for the other guy, O is genuinely funny when he spoofs on his given names, but otherwise, he looks stiff — as though he doesn’t really get (or enjoy) most of the jokes. Or maybe the roast format just doesn’t suit his personality. You’ve gotta be somewhat down-to-earth to enjoy a good roast, and Heaven knows, that is not O. Even when he was making jokes I thought were hilarious, he was flat.
