About that “gender gap” …

September 16, 2008

Obama recently displayed his ignorance that equal pay for equal work is the law of the land and has been so since 1963 — when he was, what, 2 years old?

His official website says this:

Fighting for Pay Equity:

Despite decades of progress, women still make only 77 cents for every dollar a man makes. A recent study estimates it will take another 47 years for women to close the wage gap with men at Fortune 500 corporate offices. Barack Obama believes the government needs to take steps to better enforce the Equal Pay Act, fight job discrimination, and improve child care options and family medical leave to give women equal footing in the workplace.

Never one to believe that a Modern Liberal means what he says or is willing to walk his talk, I did a little digging.  I went to Legistorm and searched for Obama’s staff salary data.  Lotsa names there, so it took awhile, but I took the salary data for FY 2007 only and only the data for staff work that was for Obama’s office.  There are many people listed there who didn’t work for Obama in 2007, or who worked for several congressmen or committees.  I did not include work for other congressmen, committees or other government offices.  So only work for Obama and only in FY 2007.   You can see the data list I came up with here.

Why FY 2007 and not more recent data?  Because I want to know what O was doing before he was under the big microscope.  What does he do when no one is looking?

I noted each salary, the last name of that staffer, his or her sex, how many months they worked for Obama, and their average salary per month.  I tried to round the months worked to the nearest half-month.  Boy, look at all those folks who only worked there for 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 months — wassup with that?  No private sector business could survive with that much instant turnover … but I digress.

Putting the data into an Excel spreadsheet, I sorted it by months worked.  For starters, let’s look just at Obama’s full-time employees.  Let’s sort those by salary.

————————  12-Month Employees  ——————–
Top “x” Employees
by Salary   Nbr. Of Men Nbr. Of Women

5   5   0
10   7   3
15   11   4
20   13   7
25   15   10
30   17   13
35   19   16

Do I perceive a smoking gun there?  Oops, sorry, Obama doesn’t like guns.  Is there not a glass ceiling there, right there, in Obama’s own glass house?  Look at that top 5 employees group — all men, every one.

As we go down the list, we see that women begin to be hired into the next group of 5 at the rate of 3-to-2, and that ratio is the most common in the subsequent groups.  So apparently Obama has no problem with hiring women, even more women than men — just not into the topmost jobs.

You can do a similar analysis sorted by salary per month rather than total salary.  Basically the same results.

The overall average salaries for Obama’s 12-month employees:

Men:   $  73,103.96

Women:   $  50,241.04

Lookee there, the ladies make a full 68.7 % of the men’s average salary.  Now there’s some change we can believe in !!!   Pocket change, that is.

If we included the employees who worked for Obama for less than 12 months, we would see relative parity in the number of men and women hired.  If you want, you can do it, but I won’t for the sake of keeping this post under 3 feet long.  Another issue with the short-timers is whether they were truly “employees” or perhaps “contractors” hired to do a specific project only — no way to know that from Legistorm’s data.  We do want to compare apples to apples, after all.

So what do we take away from this?

  • Lady, you’re just a nobody amateur nib-nose, so everything you’ve said means nothing.   If you wish.
  • True, you’re  a degreed engineer, one of the more numerate individuals in our society, but it’s still an amateur analysis, so it still doesn’t mean much.   Better.  I enjoyed that little ego stroke.
  • Looks kinda bad for O.  Ayup.
  • He’s a Modern Liberal, what do you really expect, consistency and truth?  Get real, dude.   Ah, ok, if you wish.

You can find similar analyses by more eminent persons all over the web.  But I had to do this one myself to convince myself that there is merit in the charge.  Having seen and done this myself, I am more willing to grant credibility to others’ claims on the same subject.

Hence, an interesting comparison of Obama and McCain on this issue.  Read this, done for a different time period and with slightly different parameters, and tell me which man you think is the sexist pig  more sexist.
